Active children having fun

Kids and sport go together. Children are naturally active and have lots of energy to burn. Channelling all that energy into a sport will provide them with numerous benefits. Sport teaches them a range of skills like coordination, hand/eye movement, working as a team and working towards a common goal. There's also health benefits associated with sport such as maintaining a healthy weight, improving mental health and active kids grow up to be active adults.

Tri to cycle

This week we discuss the last discipline of a triathlon - cycling.

While some feel this is the easier of the disciplines, it still requires training. A standard tri has a 40km cycle ride but can go to 180km for the ultra distance triathlons. The Manawatu Toyota Team Relay Challenge held on Sunday December 4 has a 5km cycle ride perfect if you're new to triathlons.

Warming up to winter

I find getting outside to do some activity during the winter months a lot more difficult. Not just because it's so dark but because it's so cold. However, with proper preparation and the right motivation, you can still enjoy an outdoor workout. Here's how.

Dress warmly - It's important to stay warm when doing physical activity outside. Dress for the conditions such as windproof and waterproof clothing. Even little things like a hat or gloves can make a big difference. Your body temperature will increase as you move around so you don't want many layers. Dress for a temperature 2-3 degrees less than what it actually is outside. It also pays to be prepared in case the weather turns nasty.

Don't let the cold get to you

The end of daylight savings signifies days are getting shorter, darker and definitely cooler but that doesn't mean our activity has to go cold as well.

It can be difficult adjusting to the change of seasons but the sooner you do the better to keep the exercise momentum going. With autumn upon us, a few small changes and a bit more planning should be enough to keep fit and active throughout the colder months.

Dressing warmer should be top of the list. You can always take off more layers if you get too warm. Warming up and stretches will increase blood flow and keep you warm. It's also important to be seen so wear reflective gear when it's dark.

Sport + Better Wellbeing

One’s perspective on sport differs for each person. One person may relate sport to competition, hard work, training and fitness. Another could have images of professional players competing, big sporting events like the Olympics or the excitement of just watching it. Perhaps a lesser thought around sport, but just as important, is the effect it has on a person’s wellbeing.

Sport is designed for everyone - male and female, old and young, professional and social. You don’t have to be skilled or fit, but you do need to be willing to give it a go. Sport provides a whole range of benefits to its participants. People who are regularly involved in exercise tend to be healthier. Some advantages of getting into sport include:

Where are the monkey bars?

Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly... and kids gotta climb, jump and balance! Have you ever been in a queue with young children where there are bars or line dividers about? What do you see the children doing? I imagine you would see children attempting to swing and hang about on such equipment.

Day 25 - 24 November 2009 9.00am

I arrived to start day 25, and what a reception I got, a group of young men from Waitara High School sent me off with a very passionate Haka. I was so moved, and drew strength from their energy, I set off with Ultra Runner Ash Smith, heading North. Ash has just had knee surgery so I was so pleased he was up to running with me, a little different from his usual companion, his Dalmation dog.I had a busy day today not only did I have to run, but I had an engagement with some local Schools and a couple of Rest homes in Taranaki, at Puk...

Day 20 - 19 November 2009

The earth moved this morning...We had an earthquake , 5.1 on the ritcher scale, I didn't feel it, as I had started running... Nadene was in my Support vehicle, and she did, the vehicle rock and rolled quite violently. Jason and Isobel were back at the Celtic Motel, in Foxton. For Jason this was his first earthquake. He was still in bed and thought a train was going past....he is American, and is more used to Hurricanes and Tornados, but he was excited by having experienced it.... Read More
