Halberg Trust Activity Fund 2010
By Helen Johnson, Sport Opportunity Advisor
Over the past year the Halberg Trust Activity Fund has supported 28 young disabled people in our region to access sporting opportunities. The Halberg Trust Activity Fund provides grants to enable young people with a disability to participate in inclusive sport and recreation within their community.
Applications can be made to support physical activities or equipment. Many children are now doing swimming or gymnastics lessons, others have new adapted equipment like trikes, trampolines or specialised sporting equipment.
Activity Fund Success Stories often lead to future international success stories. George Hewitt used the Halberg Activity Fund so he could be coached in athletics. Since then George has gone on to represent New Zealand in the athletics team that went to the Paralympic Youth Games in Melbourne at the end of 2009. George won gold in the 400m and 800m races and bronze in the 200m race and to top it all off he was awarded the 2010 Tararua Junior Sportsperson of the Year title from a record 31 nominees. If you know of a person who would benifit from the Activity fund, or if you have students with a disability at your school or club, I would urge you to identify options and pathways for them to participate in inclusive sporting opportunities.

Other Activity Fund Success Stories
In 2008 the Halberg Trust Activity Fund assisted many families with getting their children involved in sport or active leisure. Children were involved in swimming lessons, school camps and three children were funded to purchase trikes. Some of the comments made by the families were:
"without the funding our child wouldn't have been able to experience school camp with his peers, he loved doing all the activities and challenging himself on the confidence course".
"The trike has given our daughter a new sense of confidence, she loves helping on the paper run with her siblings".
"Swimming lessons give our child the feeling of been free in the water, with no pressure, one on one lessons have improved our childs skills so she feels more confident to swim with her school peers".
