Manawatu Secondary Schools News

If you want to know what is happening in our secondary schools you have come to the right place!  See what our schools and students get up to in the sporting world. Some of their achievements are truely inspirational.

Our goal is to increase the number of students active in quality sport and recreation programmes.

The secondary schools programme includes running regional sports events, supporting the work of competition providers, assisting schools in developing sport and physical activity planning documents, providing professional development opportunities, resources and working with key stakeholders to advocate for the needs of young people.

2014 Manawatu Inter Secondary Schools Cross Country

Cross Country Girls 2014

It was a perfect day for the Manawatu Inter Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships on June 4th. For the first time, the event was held at the Massey Sport and Rugby Institute in Palmerston North.

There was 340 competitors registerd for the event, an all time high! It was fantastic to welcome along a new Secondary School within our region: Cornerstone Christian School and hopefully they will continue to be involved within other Manawatu events.

The most enjoyed part of the course seemed to be the water feature, which ensured that many competitors came back saturated from head to toe.

Student Star

This section is for a student who has done exeptional work within the school sporting sector. They might be an athlete, student coach or even an official.

Schools nominate and send in a photo of the person they think deserves to be the student star and the winner will be displayed here!

Name: Alex Rufer

School: Palmerston North Boys High School

Sport: Football

Age: 17

Alex has recently been signed to Wellington Phoenix Football Club. At the age of only 17 this is an impressive achievement.  Alex played for YoungHeart Manawatu where his dedication and skills developed showing just how much talent he has and how deserved his place with the Phoenix really is.

Find out more about Alex's signing here

School and Student Success

Team Of The Term

This is for a nominated team that have performed exceptionally well, they may have one a NZ Secondary School Championship or just won a game when all was against them. Schools will be asked to send through their nominations and the winner will be displayed here.

Feilding High School Girls' 1st XV

Murray Wilson/Fairfax NZ

The Feilding High School Girls' first XV have won the Schools Top 4 competition for the second year in a row.  They have continually developed and improved throughout the year and have proven to be a formidable force on the pitch.  With scores like 30-19 over Hamilton Girls' High School and 29-0 over Southland Girls' shows just how much these young ladies are dominating on a National Scale.

KiwiSport in Secondary School

KiwiSport is a major initiative that has helped many schools to take part within sports that they may not have been able to without the funding.  Pictures and updates will be found here about the KiwiSport initiatives running in our regions secondary schools.

This year Manawatu College have used the KiwiSport Fast Fund to gain participation within Taekwon-Do.  This project was undertaken by the students participating within a class designed to challenge them.  The programme helps to develop their self defence skills as well as manners and self discipline.  The students involved certainly appeared to have a great time throughout the project and continued to impress those around them with their fantastic attitutdes.

Switch Netball delivered a project to girls who were disengaeged from Netball.  These students did not feel that they would fit in with the school teams as they had low self esteem and a lower skill level within the sport.  The programme developed the girls skills and made them confident to join in with Netball at the school.  The students enjoyed the project and felt as though they gained a new found abilty to be confident as well as participate.
