What we do
At Sport Manawatu we cover much more than just sport; we run community events, work with schools, early childhood centres, coaches, volunteers and much more. In short we do anything we can to get everyone active everyday.
A bit of history
- We've been in action as a charitable trust since 1987!
- We serve in an area bounded by four territorial local authorities - Manawatu District Council, Horowhenua District Council, Tararua District Council and Palmerston North City Council.
- More than 100 primary schools, 20 secondary schools, 500 clubs and over 40 regional sports associations or club equivalents have regular contact with the Trust.
Our vision
Our vision is to get "everyone active everyday". In order to accomplish this our mission is to lead our region to increase participation in sport and active recreation.

Working with sports and athletes
Coaches
Whether you're a provider - needing information and support on recruitment, development, and retention, or you're a coach - wanting learning opportunities, resources or advice - we can help with it all.
Clubs
Are you the best club in your area or are members dropping? We can provide grassroots support including up-skilling opportunities, plus a program called club assist; let us run a €˜health check' and provide recommendations for challenges you might be facing.
Elite athletes
We run a number of awards, including Manawatu Sportsperson of the Year, which aims to recognise the number of fantastic athletes we have. To make sure these athletes have local teams to play for we also offer a Sports Management Service which looks after franchises, including their sponsorship, management and marketing.
Regional Sports Organisations (RSO's)
We assist RSO's to become more efficient and effective organisations in the delivery of sport. How? By working alongside them to develop sustainable systems and structures that will achieve their goals.

Education & Schools
Childhood Centres
We work with 0-5 year olds which is known as our Active Movement programme. We visit early child hood centres teaching workshops on fundamental movement skills and how these can develop and enhance the growth of your little one.
Primary & intermediate schools
Our Active School's team aims to improve physical activity opportunities and experiences for primary and intermediate students. They can support and provide valuable resources to the school, working alongside you to help get your students active and healthy.
iMove
We also run iMove in schools, which is an active transport initiative that rewards children for walking or cycling to school.
Secondary Schools
We link with secondary schools through our sports director who provides support to school sports programme's through planning and professional development opportunities. We also promote, support and organise a range of secondary school sports competitions and events.

Health
Wanting to get more physically active? Get yourself a Green Prescription. A Green Prescription (GRx) can be obtained from your doctor, nurse or community health worker and is a script with a difference. Instead of medicine it prescribes physical activity. Sport Manawatu run a Green Prescription programme which offers support and advice to patients by providing education sessions and classes which include walking, aqua aerobics or resistence training.

Events
One of our focuses is events that get the whole family involved, including Push Play days, cycling events and everything from running to skateboarding. We can assist with running events, including information on venues, funding, promotions and everything in between. We've built up a wide range of contacts and have a comprehensive volunteer database that can be utilised.
