Period Project

WOMEN AND GIRLS

Let's talk periods.

Periods can feel like a bit of a mystery when you’re first getting used to them, and even later on they can still throw the odd curveball. This page brings together clear, friendly information to help you understand what’s going on in your body, what’s normal, and how to look after yourself through each part of your cycle. Whether you’re opening a period pack for the first time, hunting for quick tips, or just want to know you’re not alone in figuring it all out, you’re in the right place.

Phases of the menstrual cycle

  • Your menstrual cycle starts at puberty and is a series of changes your body goes through to make pregnancy possible.
  • Your menstrual cycle is counted from the first day of your period (the first day you bleed from your vagina) until the day before your next period.
  • The menstrual cycle is around 28 days long. But everyone’s cycle is different – and anywhere between 21 to 35 days is normal.

Top tips

  • You can keep doing the things you love — sport, swimming, and being active. Your period doesn’t have to hold you back.
  • Tracking your cycle helps you understand your body. Knowing your pattern can make each month feel easier.
  • Changing pads or tampons regularly helps you feel fresh and comfortable.
  • Dark underwear is a great choice on heavier days. It can help you feel confident wherever you are.
  • Keeping a small period kit on you means you’re always prepared. Think: spare products, clean underwear, wipes, and pain relief if you use it.
  • Warm showers, stretching, or a heat pack can make your body feel really good during cramps.
  • Drinking water and eating well supports your energy and overall vibe.
  • Gentle movement like walking can boost your mood and ease discomfort.
  • Leaks happen to everyone — it’s normal and nothing to stress about.
  • Resting when your body asks for it is powerful. Slowing down is part of looking after yourself.
  • Wearing comfy clothes helps you feel relaxed and confident.
  • It’s normal for your cycle to take time to settle. Everyone’s body is different.
  • If your period feels very heavy, super painful, or your cycle changes a lot, reaching out to someone you trust is a strong and positive step.
  • If something feels off, talking to someone helps you feel supported.
  • Most of all, periods are natural and normal — there’s nothing to hide or feel embarrassed about. You’re doing great.
